WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH’S SECOND WEEK SPOTLIGHTS HEALTH
HAMMOND – The second week of
Southeastern Louisiana University's celebration of March as Women's History
Month will spotlight women’s health with a health fair and presentations
on heart disease, food and fitness.
On Wednesday, March 9, Maryellen
Jenkins, community health educator for North Oaks Health System, will speak
on “Heart: Gender Matters” at noon on the third floor of Sims Memorial
Library. Also on Wednesday, North Oaks will sponsor a health fair beginning
at 1 p.m. in the War Memorial Student Union ballroom.
Hospital personnel such as dieticians
and exercise specialists will be on hand to provide blood pressure checks
as well as information on controllable heart disease risk factors such
as smoking, diet, cholesterol, physical activity and diabetes.
On Thursday, March 10, Julie
Boutwell and Jeff Day of Spoga Studio in Hammond will offer “Amazing You,”
a motivational seminar focusing on exercise, fitness and food. The free
seminar is scheduled for 12:30 p.m., also at the library.
Women’s History Month’s will
continue during the second week with three lunchtime lectures at the library.
At noon on Monday, March 7, June Dunn, a doctoral candidate in English
at the City University of New York and visiting assistant professor at
Southern Connecticut State University, will speak on “Matriarchal Societies:
From Pre-history to 21st Century Louisiana.”
On Tuesday, March 8, Bill Robison,
head of the Southeastern Department of History and Political Science, will
speak on “Mary Magdalen, the Da Vinci Code, and History.” He will be followed
on Friday, March 11, by associate professor of history Judith Fai-Podlipnik,
who has chosen as her topic “Stalin’s Sweethearts Take Up Arms: Soviet
Women During World War II.”
Both lectures are scheduled for
12:30 p.m. in Sims Memorial Library.
The observance of Women's History
Month is sponsored by the Southeastern Women’s Coalition, the College of
Arts and Sciences, Sims Memorial Library, the American Association of University
Women, and the departments of History and Political Science, English, and
Communication.
