SLU NURSING HOSTS WOMEN'S HEALTH EXPO OCT. 19
HAMMOND Southeastern Louisiana University's Department of Nursing will host a
Women's Health Expo from 8 a.m. to noon on Thursday, Oct. 19, at the Church of Jesus Christ
of Latter-Day Saints in Hammond, 2503 Old Baton Rouge Hwy.
The fun and informative workshop will include educational topics and health screenings
and will also offer door prizes and a complimentary lunch.
The special program is being organized by senior nursing students Nicole Hudson,
Meredith Tittsworth and Debra Lee Populis of Hammond and Melissa Anthon of Loranger and is
co-hosted by the Louisiana State University Agriculture Center, Project Independence and the
Relief Society of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
At the expo, Southeastern's Recreational Sports and Wellness Department will conduct
body fat composition screenings, the university's counseling services will offer stress analysis,
and nursing students will screen for blood glucose levels.
Participants are also invited to bring their favorite recipes to be evaluated for nutritional
content by a home economist.
Educational topics include:
"Sugar, It's time to Get Down," presented by North Oaks Health System Patient
Education Coordinator Joy Castell, who will focus on types of diabetes, diabetes risk factors,
normal blood glucose levels and the effects of eating on blood glucose.
"Secrets of Exercise and Weight Loss" by Southeastern faculty Robert Kraemer, an
exercise physiologist, and Susan Quinn of the Human Development Department. The session
will evaluate the different types of weight loss methods on today's market and provide

information about incorporating exercise as a weight loss tool.
"Stressed to the Max!" presented by University Counselling Center Director Tom
Terrell. Terrell will look at the differences between physical and emotional stress and how they
can be combatted.
"Bone Up with Good Nutrition," presented by North Oaks Health System Outpatient
Dietitian Kelly Behlar, who will discuss risk factors for bone disease and the role nutrients play
in bone health.
