SOUTHEASTERN SPOTLIGHTED AT AMERICAN COLLEGE DANCE FESTIVAL
HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University's dance students will be showcased
when Southeastern hosts the American College Dance Festival, March 15-18.
More than 400 dancers from colleges throughout the South will participate in the festival,
hosted by Southeastern's department of kinesiology and health studies. The festival will feature
nightly concerts of student choreography and daily dance master classes.
Southeastern dancers will present two performances at the concert at 7 p.m. on
Wednesday, March 15. The first is choreographed by Lillian Gray, a December 1999 graduate
from Slidell. The piece, titled "Gray's Anatomy," describes the dancer's instrument, her body. "I
really like the piece because of the dazzling technical side, the sheer physicality, and the subtlety
of detail and sensitivity. It shows the poignancy of a person's frailty and strength," said Martie
Fellom, director of Southeastern's dance program.
The second Southeastern work is choreographed by faculty member Dana Brewer. Titled
"Apathy," the piece uses both voice and musical accompaniment. "I took the text from actual
newscasts, newspaper articles or articles on the internet," Brewer said. "The piece is about
peoples' desensitized view and lack of concern towards other individuals, races, and cultures. It
displays the indifference our culture has towards mass destruction, genocide, and social and
racial injustice. The piece portrays and questions society's war concerning the superior race,
culture, or people."
Dancers are Arthur Simon and Michele Cudd, Hammond; Jonathan McGee, Ponchatoula;
Jennifer Molero, Laplace, Laura Read and Debbie Rodriguez, Chalmette; Nichole Brown and
Grace Latino, Metairie; Jessica Burke, Mandeville; Nathalie Croix, Paris, France; Carolyn
Fulton, Reserve, and Leslie Kernan, Prairieville.
