ART OF AFRICA EXHIBIT OPENS AT SLU'S CLARK HALL GALLERY
HAMMOND -- "The Art of Africa," an exhibit of African art from Zaire on loan from
Southern University of New Orleans's Bertrand Collection, will open Oct. 30 at Southeastern
Louisiana University's Clark Hall Gallery.
The exhibit, which will be on display through Dec. 5, is "the first of many cooperative
endeavors between the Southeastern and Southern art departments," said gallery director Don
Marshall. "We're grateful to SUNO for lending us these wonderful artworks from the Bertrand
Collection."
The Art of Africa was donated to SUNO by Drs. William and Jane Bertrand. Housed in
SUNO's library, includes some 700 examples from nine ethnic groups.
Marshall said the exhibit will open with a reception from 4-6 p.m. Dr. Sara Hollis, curator
of SUNO's African Art Collection, will conduct a gallery walk at 5 p.m. to present the collection.
Hollis, a member of the SUNO faculty since 1973, teaches African humanities, art history and a
seminar on Zaire art. She has received several grants to develop SUNO's African art collection
and to train public school teachers in African art studies.
Special tours of the Art of Africa are being offered to area schools. Interested schools
should contract Marshall at 549-2193.
Clark Hall Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., weekdays.
