BETH ROBINSON NAMED SLU LAB SCHOOL PRINCIPAL
HAMMOND -- Beth Robinson has "come home" to Southeastern Louisiana University
to head the university's award-winning laboratory school.
"I've been part of Southeastern since I was a junior in high school and attended a special
program for high school students. This is coming home to me," said the Amite resident, who
brings 25 years experience as a teacher and administrator to her new appointment as principal of
the kindergarten through eighth grade school on the Hammond campus.
Those 25 years include four years as a member of Southeastern's teacher education
faculty and 10 years as Laboratory School kindergarten teacher. Robinson most recently served
as Section 504 coordinator for the Tangipahoa Parish School System, where she coordinated
activities related to students with disabilities. She was also a kindergarten teacher at Amite
Elementary School, worked as an independent evaluator for the state's LaTIP/LaTEP teacher
assessment program, and was a fifth grade teacher at Covington Middle School.
Robinson is a former "Elementary Teacher of the Year" for the state's Region VII and
Tangipahoa Parish and was named "Teacher of the Year" at Covington Middle School and the
Southeastern Lab School. She earned her bachelor's, master's, plus-30 and education specialist
degrees at Southeastern.
"We are pleased to have Ms. Robinson back in this new capacity and are looking forward
to her leadership," said Martha Head, interim dean of the Southeastern College of Education and
Human Development.
"I'm looking forward to a very smooth and successful year and to an even stronger
partnership with the College of Education and Human Development," Robinson said. "The
Southeastern Lab School is a good strong school and we are proud of what we are. However,
there is always room to improve. Our teachers are sharing with me some wonderful plans for the
coming school year. We're going to do everything possible to help our students reach their full
potential."
Robinson said she is also looking forward to improvements to the Lab School's home, the
Cate Teacher Education Center, which will undergo a $6.2 million expansion this year. The
project will allow the Southeastern Lab School to expand into classroom areas previously used
for university courses and provide a new science lab, larger office area and meeting space.
