"BUSINESS BREAKFAST" TO FEATURE HENRY "TANK" POWELL
HAMMOND -- State Representative Henry "Tank" Powell of Ponchatoula will be the
guest speaker at the Southeastern Louisiana University College of Business and Technology's
"Business Breakfast" scheduled for April 9 at Southeastern's Twelve Oaks.
The breakfast, the second in a new series initiated by the college last fall, will begin at
7:30 a.m. Tickets are $10 and seating is limited to 200.
Since his election to the Louisiana State House of Representatives for District 73 in 1995,
Powell has earned a reputation for hard work and coalition building.
He was a leader in securing over $75 million for Southeastern, and an additional $4
million for the restoration of the Columbia Theatre for the Performing Arts in downtown
Hammond. His accomplishments also include funding for Livingston Parish's Tickfaw State
Park, teachers' pay raises, a new addition to the Florida Parishes Detention Center and
improvements at Hammond's Zemurray Park.
Powell received the 1996 New Legislator Award from the Louisiana Federation of
Teachers and the Youth Service Bureau and the House Legislative Rural Caucus Achievement
Award. He was been named Louisiana Legislator of the Year by the Chiropractic Association of
Louisiana, 1999 Outstanding Legislator of the Year by Crimefighters, Inc., and the 2000
Legislator of the Year by Victims Against Crime.
Powell has also been honored by the Louisiana Farm Bureau, Louisiana Cattlemen's
Association, Louisiana Juvenile Detention Association, Louisiana Association of Self-Insured
Employers, and Options, Inc.
Before beginning his role as a representative, Powell led a career in the insurance industry
for 33 years.
