SLU to join Southland Conference
President Sally Clausen yesterday announced that Southeastern will join the Southland Conference (SLC) beginning in 1997. Dr. Clausen pointed out that the move is in the best interest of the university from both a financial and athletic standpoint.
The Southland Conference is a perfect match for this university because we will join most of Louisiana's regional universities, thus enhancing rivalries," Dr. Clausen said. "Also, let me make it clear that this move is about increasing our attendance and gate receipts at athletic events, and reducing our travel costs."
Southeastern, competing at the NCAA Division I level since 1980, has been a member of the Trans America Athletic Conference since 1991 and will compete in the TAAC for the 1996-97 season.
The Southland, with its offices in Dallas, consists of Nicholls State, McNeese State, Northwestern State, Northeast Louisiana, Sam Houston State, Stephen F. Austin, Southwest Texas, Texas-Arlington and Texas-San Antonio. The conference sponsors championships in football (I-AA), women's volleyball, men's and women's cross country, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's indoor and outdoor track and field, men's and women's tennis, softball, baseball and men's golf. The SLC has bids to NCAA championships in men's and women's basketball, football, baseball, softball and women's volleyball.
Southland Commissioner Greg Sankey stated that Southeastern will be a great asset, and that the entire membership looks forward to working with Southeastern to continue the overall enhancement of the Southland Conference and its member universities.
