 BLACK HISTORY MONTH  CELEBRATION AT SOUTHEASTERN  
     HAMMOND -- A Greek Step show demonstration, exhibits, film festival, town hall
meeting and singer Charmaine Neville are scheduled for Southeastern Louisiana University's
celebration of Black History Month. 
     The month kicks off with an opening ceremony in the Student Union park at noon. Black
Greek fraternities and sororities will give a "step" demonstration and a history of step.
     Southeastern's Office of Residential Life will host screenings of the video "Skin Deep"
Feb. 3, 9, and 23. Dormitory residents and non-residents are invited. A discussion will follow the
screening. 
     Multicultural Affairs and the College of Business will sponsor the annual "Let's Get
Acquainted" Program for African American Students, Feb. 4, 6:30 pm in the Student Union
Ballroom. SLU alumnus, Duane Donald is the guest speaker. 
     Recognizing and understanding cultural differences is the focus of the Town Hall
Meeting, Feb. 24, 6:30 pm in the Student Union Ballroom. Panelists will include students of
different races and cultures who have been assigned a partner that they have interacted with for a
month. The students will discuss their interactions. Input and comments from the audience are
encouraged. 
     Art exhibits scheduled for the month include "Images of the South" featuring the work of
New Orleans photographers, Keith Calhoun & Chandra McCormick, and the Louisiana State
Capitol's traveling exhibit "The Morial Legacy" with photographs chronicling the careers of
Mayors Dutch Morial and Marc Morial. Both exhibits will run Feb. 1-26.
     Southeastern's Campus Activities Board is sponsoring an African-American Film
Festival Feb. 8 and 9.  
     The Closing Ceremony on Thursday, Feb. 25 will feature singer Charmaine Neville. The
ceremony will take place in the Student Union Mall and Park, 12:00-2:00 p.m.

     The campus radio station, KSLU will provide special programming throughout the month
including a program on Jazz in the Arts and profiles of Duke Ellington, Paul Robeson and lyricist
Andy Razaf.

Southeastern Louisiana University's 1999 Black History Month Schedule 
               February 1     Opening Ceremony - The Story of Black History Month
                              Student Union Park, 12:00 p.m. The ceremony will also include a history
               of step and a step demonstration.

               February 3     Screening of "Skin Deep" video followed by Discussion
                              The video and discussion on interracial relations  will take place in Lee
               Hall, Holloway Smith, and Livingston.  Non-residents are welcome and
               encouraged to attend.  The screening schedule is as follows:

               Duane Donald, an SLU Alumnus.

               February 8-9   African American Film Festival
               February 8, 1999 - Drive In Movie - Title to be Announced
                              February 9, 1999 - Amistad - 6:00 p.m.  The true story of a slave ship
               revolt in 1839 and of the trial that followed.  Discussion will take place
               following the screening.
