Major campus construction boom underway

The student population is not the only thing going up. The following projects are either underway or on the drawing board:

Campus Gate. A new grand entrance gate to the University was constructed this summer as a joint project by the Student Government Association and the University. When completed, visitors will enter campus at University Avenue (formerly Columbus Drive) and Sycamore Steet, which was recently widened to four lanes.

College of Business. A landmark $3.5 million renovation project expanding the College of Business is scheduled for completion this fall. This complete overhaul will make the 48,000 square-foot building that once housed the library the second largest classroom complex on campus. The CollegeÕs new quarters will include two Harvard-style classrooms, eight standard sized classrooms and six small classrooms, along with three microcomputer labs, a business research center, Small Business Development Center, three conference rooms, and faculty offices.

Greek Row. A 15-acre tract north of campus is being developed to build one of the most attractive Greek Rows in the state. "Our goal is to develop a first class fraternity row that the University, students and community can be proud of," said Provost Randy Moffett. Sigma Tau Gamma and Delta Tau Delta have already expressed intent to build there.

Welcome Center and new Campus Police Headquarters. The old military science building is being renovated and converted to a new Welcome Center and state-of-the-art office for campus police.

Pursley Hall. In addition to a new and contemporary facade, renovations will provide faculty and students with first-rate classrooms and laboratories. Updates to the Science Annex are also underway.

New Classroom Facility. The state legislature has proposed $1.3 million planning money for a new multi-purpose classroom and science research building . This building, which will cost approximately $13 million to construct, will be the first academic facility to be built on campus since 1971.

Baseball Stadium. Newly constructed Alumni Field has given a shot in the arm to the baseball program. A record-breaking crowd of 3,500 fans packed the stadium this year. The stadium is luxuriously equipped with field level box seats, grandstand press boxes, and an inning-by-inning scoreboard. The $750,000 project was funded by the Alumni Association and SLU Booster Club.

Recreation Facility.student approved fee assessment will finance a $9.9 million recreation-fitness center, containing a four-court gymnasium, racquetball courts, and a three-lane suspended jogging track.

Westside School. Thanks to the Louisiana LegislatureÕs recent $4.4 million appropriation, Southeastern will renovate and convert the old elementary school to university classrooms and offices.
