EDUCATIONAL CABILDO EXHIBIT AT SOUTHEASTERN IN AUGUST
HAMMOND, LA -- Southeastern Louisiana University will host a new traveling exhibit,
The "Very Illustrious" Cabildo: Witness to Two Centuries of Louisiana History, August 14-
September 13 in the Sims Memorial Library.
The exhibit was created by the Louisiana State Museum to bring the story of the Cabildo
into communities statewide. The exhibit features over fifty historic images, photographs and
architectural renderings that focus on events that have occurred in and around the 200-year-old
landmark.
Designed to evoke the famous structures's distinctive and unique architecture, the six-
panel exhibit presents the history of the Cabildo as a microcosm of the history of Louisiana. An
illustrated time line graphically portrays Louisiana's evolution from a European colony to an
American state. For a more people-oriented view, an inter-active "visit to the Cabildo" panel
features photos of artifacts on view at the Cabildo in New Orleans. Among these are images of a
Chitimacha Indian basket, an African headdress, and embroidered bee from Napoleon's
coronation robe.
The "Very Illustrious" Cabildo" exhibit was created by State Museum curator Wayne
Phillips with exhibit designer Patrick Burns. It was developed under the supervision of Tamra
Carboni, Museum director of public programs. An accompanying worksheet was developed by
the State Museum's education department to assist school teachers in explaining the mutlicultural
aspects of the exhibit.
Funding for the traveling exhibit was provided by the Friends of the Cabildo, Associates
of the Louisiana State Museum.
The "Very Illustrious" Cabildo: Witness to Two Centuries of Louisiana History can be
viewed during Library hours: 7:30 a.m.-10 p.m., Mon-Wed; 7:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Th-F; 9 a.m.-1
p.m., Saturday; 6-10 p.m. For more information contact Southeastern's Visual Arts department at
