CAROLLO NAMED SOUTHEASTERN'S ALUMNUS OF THE YEAR
HAMMOND Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Russell Carollo has been named
Southeastern Louisiana University's 2000 Alumnus of the Year. He will be honored Friday,
November 17 at 7 p.m. at the Alumni Awards Evening in Southeastern's Twelve Oaks.
Carollo earned his bachelor's degree in history and a minor in journalism from
Southeastern in 1980. He has worked for small newspapers in Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi and
Washington, and is now a special projects reporter at the Ohio Daily News in Dayton, Ohio.
In 1998, Carollo and a Daily News co-worker won the Pulitzer Prize in National News
Reporting for a series on corruption in military medicine. The stories detailed poor hospital
conditions and incompetent doctors. As a result of the expose', the U.S. government passed
stricter laws on the quality of military healthcare.
Carollo has also been a Pulitzer Prize finalist twice in 1992 for "Lives on the Line," an
expose on the military's negligence in protecting workers, and in 1996 for "Military Secrets," a
series detailing how the military allowed hundreds of accused sex offenders to escape trial or go
free despite convictions.
Carollo has also won the Gerald R. Ford Prize for Distinguished Reporting on the
National Defense, the Harvard University's Goldsmith Award, the White House Correspondents'
Association Edgar A. Poe Award and the Society of Professional Journalists' national award for
investigative reporting.
