SOUTHEASTERN CONCERT CHOIR IS A WINNER
HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University's Concert Choir has won a "Tribute
to the Classical Arts" award, an extension of the New Orleans area Big Easy Entertainment
Awards, in the new "Best Choral Arts Presentation" category.
The awards were announced at a ceremony and luncheon January 28 at the Monteleone
Hotel in New Orleans.
The Concert Choir was honored for its May 2, 1998 performance of Bach's "Mass in B
Minor" at St. Joseph's Seminary College near Covington. The performance was directed by Brad
Richmond, now director of choral arts at Hope College in Holland, Michigan.
John Miller, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, and David Evenson, head of the
music department, hosted a reception for choir members on Feb. 4. Evenson said that one of the
award program judges told him that "of all the performances he heard, in all the category, ours
was the most exciting."
Southeastern shared the awards category with Loyola University Choirs and the Louisiana
Philharmonic Orchestra Symphony Chorus. "We were the only non-New Orleans area
organization, in any category, to be nominated," Miller said, proudly.
The Tribute to the Classical Arts program, founded by Gambit Weekly in 1994, honors
achievements in classical music, dance and opera. The choral award was one of several
categories added to the awards program this year.
