SOUTHEASTERN HOSTS HIGH SCHOOL CHOIR INVITATIONAL
HAMMOND -- Approximately
200 young singers from six area high schools will participate Friday, October
24 in the Southeastern Louisiana University Department of Music and Dramatic
Arts' first "Choir Invitational." The event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to
3:30 p.m. in the Pottle Music Building Auditorium.
Alissa Rowe, Southeastern’s
director of choral activities, said the schools will each receive 20-minute
sessions with the event's guest artist, David Fryling, head of the choral
department at Hofstra University in Long Island, N.Y. Some students also
will be invited to participate in masterclasses with Southeastern
voice professors Scharmal Schrock and Joy Ratliff.
Participating choirs are
the Ponchatoula High School Chamber Singers, Northshore High School A cappella
choir, Fontainebleau High School Mixed Vocal Ensemble, Slidell High School
Advanced Women's Choir, Walker High School Concert Choir, and the St. Scholastica
Academy Women's Choir.
The day of singing and instruction
will conclude with a 3:45 p.m. concert by Southeastern's Concert Choir
and Women's Chorale. Rowe said the choirs will perform selections from
their upcoming fall concert. The participants will also be invited to attend
the Wind Symphony's 7:30 p.m. concert, "Godzilla Eats Las Vegas," at the
Columbia Theatre for the Performing Arts.
Rowe said the public is
invited to listen to the choirs perform throughout the day and to the Southeastern
choirs’ concluding performance. For additional information, contact her
