SLU CONCERT CHOIR NOMINATED FOR ARTS AWARD
HAMMOND -- The Southeastern Louisiana University Concert Choir has been
nominated for a Tribute to the Classical Arts award, an extension of the New Orleans area Big
Easy Entertainment Awards.
The Concert Choir's May 2, 1998 performance of Bach's "Mass in B Minor" at St.
Joseph's Abbey in Covington is one of three nominations in the new "Best Choral Arts
Presentation" category. Loyola University Choirs and the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra
Symphony Chorus are also nominated.
The Tribute to the Classical Arts program, founded by Gambit Weekly publisher Margo
DuBos in 1994, honors achievements in classical music, dance and opera. The awards will be
announced at a ceremony and luncheon January 28 at the Monteleone Hotel in New Orleans.
Brad Richmond, then Southeastern's director of choral activities, conducted the
nominated performance, which also featured accompaniment by full orchestra and St. Joseph's
organist the Rev. Sean Duggan on harpsichord. Soloists were Stephen Rushing, a member of
Southeastern's music department faculty; Jessica Tuttle Molin, a Southeastern alumnus and
adjunct voice instructor; Leslie Jones, also a Southeastern graduate; William McCrary of the
University of New Orleans faculty, and Leon Turner of Southern University's music department.
Richmond is now director of choral arts at Hope College in Holland, Michigan.
The Tribute to the Classical Arts awards ceremony is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
and includes live performances by nominated dancers, vocalists and classical musicians. Tickets
are $20. For reservations, call Jeri Newsom at 504-486-5900, ext. 160. Seating is limited.
