COACHING LEGENDS TO BE HONORED AT SLU COACHING CLINIC
HAMMOND -- Eight Southeastern Louisiana University alumni will be honored as
"Coaching Legends" Saturday, June 25 at a 5 p.m. reception at the Southeastern Alumni
Center.
Scheduled to be honored are Linda Trevino, Margaret Knoker Millet, Robert Gros,
Charles Baglio Jr., Alton Leggette, Kenny Almond, Jennifer Smith Goodwin, and Jo Ann
Smith.
"We're taking this opportunity to honor Southeastern graduates who have made a mark in
coaching throughout the state," said Gayle Neal, assistant dean of Continuing Education. "We've
had some very successful coaches come out of Southeastern and we're very proud of them."
Trevino, a 1969 graduate, is the women's sports varsity coach at St. Martin's Episcopal
School in Metairie. She was three times named Louisiana High School Athletic Association
Coach of the Year and Louisiana Volleyball Coaches Association Coach of the Year. She has
been named LHSAA All Star Coach, All Star Coordinator, Region Five Coach of the Year for
the National High School Athletic Coaches Association, and twice the Times-Picayune's Metro
Coach of the Year.
Millet, also a 1969 graduate, coached for Metairie Park Country Day from 1972-1999.
Her honors include Region Five Coach of the Year for the National High School Coaches
Association, Louisiana Volleyball Coaches Hall of Fame and Coach of the Year, American
Volleyball Coaches Association Career Wins, the Times-Picayune's Jefferson Bureau Coach of
the Year, and LHSAA District Coach of the Year. She is past president of the Louisiana
Volleyball Coaches Association, coached the East/West All Star Game, was East/West All Star
coordinator and assistant coordinator,

co-chaired the LHSAA State Volleyball Tournament and served on the Mikasa Advisory Board.
Gros, a 1960 graduate, lettered three years in football and four years in track while at
Southeastern. He coached football, track and golf from 1960-1995 at St. Francis deSalle, South
Terrebone, Hahnville and Central Lafourche High Schools, and Nicholls State University. He
served as athletic director at Central Lafourche and Hahnville high schools. He currently serves
on the executive council of the Louisiana Football Coaches Association and is a member of the
Louisiana High School Athletic Directors Association. Gros' numerous honors include
Lafourche Parish Coach of the Year, Regional Coach of the Year, Gulf South Conference Golf
Coach of the Year, District 8 AAA Football Coach of the Year and induction into the LHSAA
Hall of Fame.
Baglio, a 1967 graduate, coached baseball and football at Independence High School
from 1967-1999. He is the president of the Louisiana Football Coaches Association and served
as
president of the Louisiana High School Coaches Association for two years. He was the East
Coordinator for the Louisiana High School Coaching Association All Star Baseball game and
was named Louisiana Sportswriters Association Coach of the Year.
Legette, a 1958 graduate coached from 1958-1973 at Maurepas, Holden and Denham
Springs High Schools. He served as Livingston Parish athletic director from 1978-1989. His
honors include state Coach of the Year, Louisiana High School Hall of Fame and parish and
district Coach of the Year. He also was named "Mr. Basketball" by the Louisiana Association of
Basketball Coaches.
Almond is a 1975 Southeastern graduate. He has coached at Baker Middle School, and
Central, Lee and Woodlawn High Schools. He has been named state Coach of the Year three
times and district Coach of the Year eight times. His Woodlawn High School basketball team
was the 1999 state champions.
Goodwin, a 1973 graduate, coached basketball and track at Doyle High School and Junior
High. She also served as athletic director.
Smith, a1964 graduate, coached from 1964-1992 at Albany High School. She was twice
named Louisiana High School Coach, was District Coach of the Year twelve times, Livingston
Parish Coach of the Year six times and was nominated for National Coach of the Year twice. The

Livingston Parish Teacher of the Year was also inducted into the Louisiana High School Hall of
Fame.
The Coaching Legends reception, which is free and open to the public, is part of
Southeastern's two day Coaching Clinic, June 25 and 26. The clinic is open to men and women
who already coach or would like to coach on any level. The cost is $25 to attend. The clinic is
also offering a pre-clinic Coaches Golf Scramble on Thursday, June 24. The golf scramble
will be held at Springview Country Club in Amite. Cost to participate is $40. For more
