SOUTHEASTERN GIVES STUDENTS TIME TO TALK
HAMMOND -- Lance Hill, executive director of Tulane University s Southern Institute
for Education and Research, will lead Southeastern Louisiana University students in "Common
Ground," a race relations study circle, on April 20.
Entitled Time to Talk, the study circle is scheduled for 3:30-6:30 p.m. in the Student
Union Ballroom. The program will give students the opportunity to interact with people of
different ethnic and religious backgrounds. The small group discussions are designed to create a
respectful environment to discuss ethnic problems on campus, reduce prejudices and form new
friendships.
Alysius Allen, interim coordinator for multicultural and international student affairs, said,
the interracial discussion program "confronts and finds solutions to racial problems.
Allen expects 30-60 students will participate in the program, which Hill will direct as
facilitator. Participants will break into small groups, moderated by students, to identify issues
and solutions that will then be discussed by all participants. Student moderators will go through a
three hour special training class on April 16 to prepare for the April 20 event. Allen said the
discussions and solutions will be outlined in a follow-up report.
Time to Talk is open to Southeastern s students, faculty, staff and the Hammond
community. For more information call 504-549-3817.
