COMPUTER LAB IMPROVEMENTS GREET SLU STUDENTS
HAMMOND -- Students returning to Southeastern Louisiana University for the Spring
1998 semester will find new computer equipment, expanded hours and improved and expanded
services in the university's computer labs and residence halls.
McClimans Hall and Tinsley Hall computer labs received more than 80 new computers in
December. Along with new equipment, the labs will have expanded hours. The McClimans lab
is open continually from 2 p.m. on Sunday until 6 p.m. on Friday. Saturdays hours are 10 a.m.
until 4 p.m.
Of Tinsley Hall's two labs, the main lab, available to all students, will open during the
week and on weekends for a total of 80 hours. The "restricted" lab is used for classes only, but
students can still work in the lab during the 20 hours that classes are not in session.
The Tinsley labs are set up like a restaurant, where a student worker seats students and
takes care of their needs as a hostess or waiter or waitress would do, explained Fred Guillot,
director of Academic Computing Services. We take information like we are taking your order,
Guillot said. Students can drop in for free tutoring in any subject. They can also reserve cubicals
and make an appoint with a lab assistant for group projects.
Guillot also said that as of Jan. 9, residence halls received new equipment. Each hall
added at least three computers, and Lee Hall, the university's largest residence hall, will
eventually have 14 computers. All the computers are up and running, and students are able to
connect to the campus system to use the Internet and e-mail.
The Mathematics and English departments and the School of Nursing will also get new

equipment before the end of February. All labs will have a standard software configuration of
Office 97, Corel Suite 8, Microsoft 97, Netscape Communicator and Winqvt, software that
provides access to the university's mainframe computer.
Students can find complete lab schedules on the Student Productivity Web Page (what's
the address?)
"The goal was to see this happen right away, and to provide more services to students,
Guillot said. It's students helping students, Guillot said.
The new equipment was funded through a technology fee approved last year by the
Legislature and voted on by Southeastern students. Southeastern's fee is $50 per student, and the
funds are dedicated to technology improvements.
