SLU ANNOUNCES 1996 HOMECOMING COURT
     HAMMOND -- Seven Southeastern Louisiana University students have been chosen to
reign over 1996 Homecoming festivities, Nov. 18-23.
     Chosen as members of the court were seniors Shelley Lynn Berthelot of Gonzales,
Avonda Mouton of Lake Charles, and Shalena Ortiz of Pearl River; juniors Faith Anne Chiasson
of Baton Rouge, Kay Elizabeth Kearney of Loranger and Heather Pearce of Ponchatoula and
freshman Claire Barker of Baton Rouge.
     The 1996 Homecoming queen, the top junior or senior vote-getter in the recent campus
election, will be announced at halftime of the Homecoming basketball game, the Lions season
opener against Loyola at 2 p.m. Nov. 23 at the Southeastern University Center.
     The court will also participate in Homecoming festivities such as the tip off pep rally at
noon on Monday, Nov. 18, the bonfire at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21 and the Alumni Awards
Evening at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22 in the University Center. ESPN sportscaster Robin Roberts, a
1983 Southeastern graduate, will be honored as "Alumnus of the Year" at the festive awards
buffet.
     On Homecoming Day, Saturday, Nov. 23, the court will ride in the 11 a.m. parade.
Beginning at First Guaranty Bank, the caravan will travel west on East Thomas Street, north on
North Oak Street, and west on University Ave. (Columbus Drive) to the University Center. The
court will also attend the free pre-game barbecue at the Alumni House and the alumni reunions at
the University Center and the Homecoming grand finale, a fireworks show, also at the University

     Berthelot is the daughter of Johnny and Kathy Berthelot and is sweetheart of Theta Xi.
The senior is an accounting major and secretary of Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority and a member of
Rho Lambda Greek Honor Society. She was a member of Theta Xi's Sweetheart Court.
     Mouton, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alfread G. Mouton, is a sociology major and is
sweetheart of Delta Sigma Theta. She is president of the Nu Delta Chapter of Delta  Sigma Theta
Sorority and a member of the Gamma Beta Phi Honor Society and Greek Judicial Board. She has
been a recipient of the African American Achievement 3 Plus Award.    
     Ortiz is the daughter of John and Dena Ortiz and is a speech communication major. She is
sweetheart of Kappa Alpha Order. A member of Phi Mu Fraternity and rush counselor, she was a
Student Government Association Senator for the College of Basic Studies, a Kappa Alpha Order
Rose and Rose Court member and a Dean's List Recipient. This is her second year as a member
of the Homecoming Court.
     Chiasson, the daughter of Thomas W. Chiasson, is a family and consumer
sciences/fashion merchandising major and sweetheart of Delta Tau Delta. She is a member of
Rho Lambda Greek Honor Society and Theta Phi Alpha sorority. She also has been Theta Phi
Alpha sweetheart, an orientation leader and SLU "ambassador" and has received the Green "S"
Award and the Steve Gienero Intramural Sport Accomplishment Award.         
     Kearney, a marketing major, is the daughter of Sherrill and Michael Kearney. She is
sweetheart and president of the Panhellenic Council. She is a member of Alpha Omicron Pi
Sorority and the American Marketing Association; a facilitator of the LEAD retreat and "Our
Chapter, Our Choice"; and a Southeastern and National Dean's List  and a Green "S" recipient.
She was Greek Woman of the Year and Most Outstanding New Member for AOII. She was a
member of the 1995 Homecoming Court.
     Pearce, the daughter of Bob and Margie Pierce, is a fashion merchandising major and
sweetheart of Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority. She is a member of the Dream Team, Fashion
Council and Student Association of Family and Consumer Sciences. She has also been a rush
counselor.

     Barker is a psychology major and is the daughter of Richard and Beth Barker. A Phi Mu
Fraternity pledge, she is a member of the Lionettes dance team and vice president of the College
Republicans.
