SLU DEBATE TEAM TAKES SECOND PLACE AT NOVICE TOURNY

     HAMMOND -- The Southeastern Louisiana University Debate Team took home second
place honors at the Novice National Debate Championships at Towson University in Baltimore,
Maryland March 8.
     The novice team of Jud Eldredge of Baton Rouge and Jeff Waguespack of Mandeville,
advanced to the final round at the national championship by defeating teams from the U.S. Naval
Academy, University of Vermont, Cornell, University of Rochester, Liberty University and the
University of Michigan. They were defeated in the final round by the U.S. Military Academy
team. 
     SLU team members Jessica Rushing of Port Vincent, La. and Celeste Sietz of
Mandeville, secured 9th and 11th place individual speaker awards as well as placing 16th in the
tournament.
     In the Varsity Division of the tournament, the team of Jason Stone of Lawton, Okla. and
Andrea Whalen of Tampa, Fla., placed 8th.
     Coach Scott Elliott, communications professor and director of debate, received Top
Coach award for the Novice Tournament.
     The debate team will next travel to Kansas for the Cross Examination Debate Association
(CEDA)Varsity National Championship at Wichita State University. The SLU team was ranked
20th in the national and first in the south central region last year by the CEDA.
