HAMMOND POLICE CHIEF SPEAKS TO SOUTHEASTERN GREEKS
HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University fraternity and sorority members
gathered last night to review alcohol policies and learned from Hammond Chief of Police Roddy
Devall how to be more responsive citizens.
As a measure to address the issue of loud and rude conduct around the bars near
Nashville Ave., Southeastern President Sally Clausen is working very closely with the Hammond
Mayor s office and the Chief of Police. To start that process, Clausen invited Devall to address
the situation directly with Southeastern Greeks.
I want to dispel bad rumors that all Southeastern students act inappropriately when they
go to local bars, Clausen said. We want to let the community know that we are addressing the
issue and promoting good citizenship and good behavior to our students.
Devall told the Greeks that his goal was to provide information so that the students would
police their own groups by asking each other to act responsibly when they are in social settings.
Our ultimate goal is to make this a better place for us all to live, Devall said. We want
all of you to graduate and become successful people.
The university requires student groups to follow strict policies in order to host a social
function. Some of those include having eight sober monitors from their organizations, security
guards at the events, and going through interactive training that addresses the issue of alcohol
abuse and how to combat it.
Also, students must register their social function 14 days prior to the event in the Division
of Student Affairs office. The students can register these events in person or via the Internet.
In closing, Clausen told the students I want your families to know that we care more
about you, the students, than anything else. She also said, We will do our part tonight; we are
asking that you also do your part.
