SLU STUDENTS EYE "DISCOVERY MUSEUM AND THEATRE OF TANGIPAHOA"
HAMMOND -- Students in Southeastern Louisiana University's Cultural Resource
Management Program are hosting an open meeting to discuss the formation of the "Discovery
Museum and Theatre of Tangipahoa."
The meeting is scheduled for 4 p.m., Monday, November 12, at the Hammond Regional
Arts Center, 217 E. Thomas, in Hammond, said Cultural Resource Management Program
Director Don Marshall.
"Over the past few years, CRM students have organized the Northshore Children's
Museum, which operated in Hammond Square Mall in 1996, and the Northshore Children's
Theatre, which presented productions such as 'Winnie the Pooh,' 'Cinderella,' and 'The Pied
Piper of Hamelin,'" said Marshall, who is also director of Southeastern's Clark Hall Gallery.
"These were class projects with a limited life."
"We now feel that a formal non-profit organization must be formed if these programs are
to have a long-term impact on the community," he said. "To make the Tangipahoa area a truly
great place to raise and nurture our children we need to expand educational and cultural resources
for our kids and our schools."
Marshall said CRM students envision a museum and theatre that will assist parents and
teachers by presenting programs emphasizing the area's cultural heritage in all of the arts,
humanities and sciences. "School groups visiting the museum will receive a tour of the
exhibition and participate in related hands-on art projects," Marshall said.
He said plans call for staging an exhibition on Louisiana Native Americans and a
children's theatre production in late February or March 2002.
The Cultural Resource Management Program prepares students for managing
preservation and commemorative areas, archaeological sites, museums, historic districts, artistic
troupes and companies, resorts, corporate collections and land holdings of historical and cultural
significance.
