SLU'S DOWNING-ALESSI AWARDED FELLOWSHIP
HAMMOND -- Hunter Downing-Alessi, an associate professor in Southeastern
Louisiana University's Counseling, Family Studies and Education Leadership, has been awarded
a clinical fellowship at the Albert Ellis Institute in New York City.
The summer program, available only to full-time university faculty, offers educators in
the field of mental health an opportunity to develop and refine supervisory and research skills in
Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy. Only eight fellowships are awarded annually.
The fellowship gives Downing-Alessi the opportunity to study with Ellis Institute
founder Albert Ellis, a pioneer of cognitive-behavioral therapy, and to practice the latest
innovations and developments in the field. At present, an estimated 12,000 psychologists,
psychiatrists and counselors worldwide use Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy.
Downing-Alessi received her master's degree from Southeastern and her doctoral degree
from the University of New Orleans. She has been a member of the Southeastern faculty for nine
years, teaching educational psychology and counseling. She is a past president of the Louisiana
Counselor Association and is involved in a variety of professional activities.
A Mandeville resident, Downing-Alessi is a Hammond native.
