SATELLITE TOWN MEETING TO FOCUS ON CLASSROOMS AND THE INTERNET
HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University's College of Education will sponsor a
Satelitte Town Meeting on "Preparing Classrooms for the Future: Assuring Access to the
Internet" at 7 p.m. Oct. 21 in the Cate Teacher Education Center.
The downlink broadcast, scheduled for Room 233, is part of an ongoing series of
Satellite Town Meetings offered by the U. S. Department of Education. Southeastern's broadcast
will be followed by a discussion of local and regional issues concerning technology in the
classroom.
The October Satellite Town Meeting will look at how schools and communities can gain
access to the Internet and use it as a tool for learning. U. S. Secretary Richard W. Riley and his
guests will discuss the recent Federal Communications Commission ruling which will implement
"universal service" ("E-rate") for schools and libraries and make available up to $2.25 billion
dollars in discounts in telecommunication services to schools and libraries in January 1998.
Other topics include how schools and libraries can develop technology plans and prepare
to apply for the E-rate; the kinds of training that will help schools and libraries use computer and
online technologies to their fullest advantage; support needed by schools and libraries to equip
students with technology skills for the job market; and the role of parents, communities and
businesses in supporting technology as a learning tool.
