SLU PROACTIVE IN ADVOCATING RESPONSIBLE BEHAVIOR
HAMMOND -- As sororities conclude "Rush Week" and fraternities begin their own fall
round of "new member" activities, the Southeastern Louisiana University administration has
been actively involved in ensuring that the traditional Greek events are successful -- and safe.
In addition to enforcing Southeastern's campus drug and alcohol policy, which combines
strict regulations on campus drinking with aggressive education initiatives, the university is also
asking the community to help ensure students safety.
President Sally Clausen and Vice President for Student Affairs Patsy Causey have begun
meeting with bar owners, city officials, area educators, Greek organization representatives and
university staff to discuss ways of promoting responsible and safe student behavior. Along with
University Police officers and new Dean of Students Jill Landesberg, Clausen has even dropped
in at area lounges to see for herself how her students are acting in the community and to assess
how area establishments are regulating responsible behavior.
"Much of the education at Southeastern occurs outside of the classroom," Clausen said.
"There are no walls around the campus and our students naturally become part of our
community. Because of that, I feel that encouraging and promoting responsible behavior is a 24-
hour-job for all of us -- the community, the university and the students themselves."
"We're asking the community to help guide our students, who are not just getting an
education in our classrooms, but are also in the process of learning important lessons of
maturity," Clausen said.
