SLU OBSERVES "DRUNK AND DRUGGED DRIVING PREVENTION MONTH"
HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University will join in the national observation
of December as National Drunk and Drugged Driving Prevention Month by conducting mock
sobriety checks and washing car windshields from 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 3, at
the War Memorial Student Union.
The program is sponsored by the Office of Student Affairs Program Development and
Evaluation, the University Police and the Louisiana State Office of Alcohol and Drug Abuse
Prevention Region IX.
High school students from the Teen Institute, a summer substance abuse prevention
program sponsored by the Department of Health and Hospital's Office of Alcohol and Drug
Abuse, will offer complimentary windshield washes as a way of stressing alcohol use
responsibility. After cleaning windshields, Teen Institute members will distribute to students a
card reading, "We have just washed your windshield so you can plainly see that drinking and
driving don't mix."
Southeastern's community policing officer Harvey Darnell will conduct mock field
sobriety checks using "Fatal Vision goggles" that simulate an estimated blood alcohol content
level of .08-1.0. Students who participate in the sobriety checks will receive a complimentary
sports bottle or stress ball.
For additional information, call Amy Livingston, Office of Student Affairs Program
Development and Evaluation, 549-3773.
