SOUTHEASTERN PLEASED WITH DUPLICATE PROGRAM RECOMMENDATIONS
HAMMOND -- The Louisiana Board of Regents' Academic Affairs Committee has
recommended that two Southeastern Louisiana University bachelor's degree programs be
eliminated and seven others be consolidated as part of the Board of Regents' statewide scrutiny
of duplicate degree programs.
"I feel good about the committee's decision," said SLU President Sally Clausen. "I want to
commend Dr. Savoie for his leadership and the individual board members for taking the time to
review the consultants' recommendations and the responses of each institution. As a result,
higher education in Louisiana has been streamlined and certainly will be more effective in the
challenges facing Louisiana."
The committee recommended that the Board eliminate Southeastern's bachelor degree
programs in English Honors and Business Education and consolidate three other bachelor degree
programs and five master degree programs.
"We are elated over the outcome," said Paul Riggs, Southeastern's director of Academic
Services. "We had submitted as a compromise our own internal recommendations and the
committee agreed to all of them."
The committee recommended that Southeastern's bachelor degree programs in Economics and
in Office Administration be consolidated as a degree in General Business. It was also
recommended that the bachelor degree in fashion merchandising be merged with the existing
degree in Family and Consumer Science. Master degree recommendations included combining
programs in Kinesiology and Health Studies as a degree in Health and Kinesiology, and
programs in Elementary Education, Secondary Education and Reading as a degree in Curriculum
and Instruction.
Riggs said all students enrolled in the eliminated programs will be allowed to complete their
