SLU HOSTS DYSLEXIA CONFERENCE
HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University will host a state-wide conference on
dyslexia on Saturday October 4, 8:00am- 4:00pm in the Cate Teacher Education Center.
The conference titled, "Dyslexia: Creativity & Diversity: The Masked Potential"is
sponsored by the Louisiana Branch of the Orton Dyslexia Society. Keynote speaker is Dr. Jane
Greene. Greene will speak on "Meducation: A decade of research at the National Institute of
Health, teaches us how to become a literate society." Greene will outline critical education
changes essential to society's return to literacy.
The conference will also included sessions on the role of arts & music in the lives of
individuals with dyslexia, diverse types of intelligence, learning styles, legalities, ADD and
dyslexia, appropriate assessment, psychological, social, emotional factors and a dyslexia
simulation in which participants experience the frustrations and difficulties of someone with
dyslexia.
The conference will target indidivudals with dyslexia and their families as well as
educators, speech/language pathologists, psychologists, medical personnel and anyone interested
in finding out more about the disorder.
Cost for the conference is $25 and up for the general public and $10 for students. A box
lunch is inlcuded. Early registration is encouraged as space is limited and pre-registration ends
September 17. Partial scholarships are available for educators. For more information and an
