SLU AND HAMMOND CHAMBER HOST ECONOMIC SYMPOSIUM
HAMMOND -- "Prospects for the Future" is the topic of Southeastern Louisiana
University's Economic Symposium Thursday June 26, 9:30 am - 2:15 pm in the SLU University
Center, room 133. A $10 registration fee includes attendance at all sessions and the luncheon.
The Symposium is sponsored by Southeastern Louisiana University's Business Research
Unit and Small Business Development Center and the Hammond Chamber of Commerce.
Among the featured speakers are Bobby Jindal, Secretary of the Louisiana Department of
Health and Hospitals who will speak on "Louisiana Medicaid Crisis and Solutions," Dr. Thomas
Johnson Cunningham, Research Officer of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta will speak on
"The Economic Outlook for Louisiana and the Southeastern United States," and Dr. Jerry Wall,
Director of the Center for Business and Economic Research at Northeast Louisiana University
who will present an Internet Demonstration of the LEAP database- a World Wide Web database
for the state of Louisiana.
Daniel Juneau, president of the Louisiana Association of Business and Industry, will give
an "Update on the 1997 Louisiana Legislative Session" at the luncheon meeting, which will also
serve as the monthly general meeting of the Hammond Chamber of Commerce. Awards for
Small Business and Small Businessperson will also be presented at the luncheon.
Symposium coordinator, Dr. Cuddalore Sundar, Director of the Business Research Unit
and assistant professor of economics at Southeastern, says the symposium is open to anyone
interested in the welfare of the community. "The symposium will bring together officials from
state and federal government, leaders of our local business and academic communities and
members of the general public. In this forum, we will explore the economic outlook for our area
and examine how key factors such as health care and legislation will affect local business and
industry. We will disseminate economic information to facilitate better decision making by the
citizens of our community."
