SOUTHEASTERN TO HOST REGIONAL ECONOMIC SUMMIT IN 2000
HAMMOND -- When Southeastern Louisiana University's 75th anniversary kicks off in
January 2000, a regional economic development workshop featuring speakers from around the
country will lead off the year's festivities.
The Southeast Louisiana Regional Economic Summit is scheduled for January 26-28 at
Southeastern's University Center. Featured speakers are Larry Harrington, executive director of
the Inter-American Development Bank, and David Kolzow, chairman of the Department of
Economic Development at the University of Southern Mississippi. Harrington and Kolzow will
be joined by more than 10 other nationally prominent guest speakers who will focus on regional
development.
According to Guy Recotta, steering committee chair, the Economic Summit is an
opportunity to provide an impetus for economic development in the area. "Our goal is to highlight
the Florida Parishes and all of Southeast Louisiana's economic potential and strengths. We're also
trying to show how Southeastern can serve as a hub for economic development for the whole
region," he said.
Other speakers include Southeastern President Sally Clausen, Governor Mike Foster's
Chief of Staff Stephen Perry, Louisiana Economic Development Secretary Kevin Reilly, President
of Southern Media and Opinion Research Bernie Pinsonat, and Randy Fiveash and Jeff Sims with
Branson, Missouri's Tourist Commission.
Conference attendees and their spouses may also participate in a golf tournament at
Hammond's Oak Knoll Country Club and a shopping tour of the Hammond/Ponchatoula area. In
addition, the Hammond Chamber of Commerce will host a regional chamber "After Hours"
reception. The event is being co-sponsored by eight area Chambers of Commerce and Entergy
Corporation.
The Economic Summit is being organized by Southeastern Louisiana University, the City
of Hammond, MetroVision, Entergy, Hammond Chamber of Commerce, Tangipahoa Economic
Development Foundation, Florida Parishes Economic Development, Tangipahoa Parish Tourist
Commission and City Court of Hammond.
