SLU SPONSORS SUMMER INSTITUTE ON YOUTH HEALTH
HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University's Excellence in Health and Education
Project is hosting Summer Institute II, a four-day program for professionals who work to
improve
the health of children and youth.
Summer Institute II is scheduled for Aug. 3-6 at Southeastern's Cate Teacher Education
Center. It is open to administrators, counselors, social workers, school psychologists, nurses,
nurse practitioners, physicians, public health employees, parents and community members, said
Millie Naquin, EHEP's associate director and a member of the university's kinesiology and
health studies faculty.
Pre-registration is required by July 16.
"The institute is for anyone who works to improve the health of youth," Naquin said. It is
sponsored by EHEP, the state Department of Education and Office of Public Health, New
Orleans Public Schools and Louisiana Area Health Education Centers.
EHEP was established at Southeastern in 1997 to forge local, regional and statewide
partnerships to enhance health and quality of life, Naquin said. The institute provides state-of-
the-art teaching and learning opportunities for health educators as well as research and evaluation
services. It also serves as an advocate for health issues and a clearinghouse for resources and
materials on health education.
Naquin said Summer Institute II will offer team tracks on training in nutrition, HIV/Aids
prevention and coordinated school health. Individual tracks will focus on topics such as
"Personal and Social Skills," "Get Real About AIDS," "Becoming a Responsible Teen,"
"Violence and Drug Prevention," "Youth Tobacco Prevention," and the "Michigan Model,"
comprehensive health curricula for grades kindergarten through high school.

on the link between nutrition and learning and how to maximize partnerships.
Participants can sign-in from noon until 2 p.m. on Aug. 3. Institute times are 2-5 p.m.,
Aug. 3; 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m., Aug. 4-5 and 8:30-11 a.m., Aug. 6.
Naquin said individuals can earn three hours of graduate credit for participation on a
school team or in several of the individual tracks. Those interested in registering for course credit
should call Southeastern Continuing Education, 504-549-2301, for more information. She also
said that continuing education units may be available.
Teachers should call Jan Drinkwater at the state Department of Education, 225-342-2678,
to find out if they are eligible for tuition exemption.
A limited number of team and individual scholarships will be available. The cost to
attend the institute depends on the level of participation and ranges from $150 per session
without lodging to $325 with lodging. Lodging will be provided in Southeastern residence halls.
