SLU'S EHEP SUMMER INSTITUTE SPEAKERS ANNOUNCED
HAMMOND, LA --Youth health is the focus for the Excellence in Health and Education
Project's (EHEP)Summer Institute August 3-7 at Southeastern Louisiana University. Guest
speakers for the Summer Institute are Dr. John Santelli of the Centers for Disease Control and
Joe Kimbrell, deputy assistant secretary for the Louisiana Office of Public Health.
Santelli will speak on the trends in adolescent sexual behavior in the United States for the
past 25 years, and the relationship of these behaviors to sexually transmitted diseases
(STD)/HIV/ pregnancy risk. He will review recent research on risk factors and prevention efforts
and the relationship between academic performance and risk behaviors.
Santelli is a medical epidemiologist and specialist in adolescent medicine with the
Division of Adolescent and School Health at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC). He previously served as director of School and Adolescent Health Services for the
Baltimore City Health Department, where he was responsible for school health centers and a
variety of prevention programs for children and youth. At the CDC he has conducted research on
school health and adolescent risk behaviors, and has conducted and evaluated programs to
prevent STD/HIV among women and to prevent vertical transmission of HIV.
Kimbrell will speak on the health status of children and youth in Louisiana, including
ways to improve their health status with an emphasis on the use of coordinated school and
community health programming.
Kimbrell's primary interests are in the areas of school health, leadership development and
promoting a Healthy Communities approach to public health policy and service delivery.

He is active in the National Association of State and Territorial Health Officials
(ASTHO) where he served three years as chair of the Management Committee, assisting in
establishing ASTHO's School Health Project. He currently serves as chair of the ASTHO School
Health Work Group.
He played a leading role in the creation of the Louisiana Maternal and Child Health
Coalition and continues to serve on its executive board. He is a 1993-94 Public Health
Leadership Institute Scholar and a past recipient of the ASTHO Nobel J. Swearingen Award for
Excellence in Administrative Management. Kimbrell in currently in the process of launching a
statewide Health Communities Initiative.
The EHEP Summer Institute offers six areas of training aimed at different grade levels
from kindergarten through high school, and addresses such topics as stress management, goal
setting and health communication, and includes teaching strategies.
The program is not limited to classroom teachers. It is open to anyone who works with
youth, including administrators, social workers, school psychologists, nurses and other health
and
education professionals, even those outside of the schools who work with young people in non-
typical settings.
The EHEP Summer Institute is sponsored by the Louisiana Department of Education and
Office of Public Health, Orleans Public Schools and Southeastern Louisiana University. To
