SLU MUSIC DEPARTMENT ANNOUNCED 1998 "ENCORE!" SERIES
HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University music department's spring concert
series, Encore!, will feature approximately 20 concert and recitals by Southeastern faculty,
students and guest artists.
Encore! 98 includes guest concerts by the famed Dutch ensemble "Quink" and the ™kr”s
Folk Music Ensemble and a performance of Baton Rouge jazz great Alvin Batiste's musical
drama "A Bitter Glory."
Quink, scheduled for Feb. 16, is a five-member vocal ensemble from the Netherlands that
performs a variety of a cappella music from Renaissance and Baroque madrigals to German
lieder and French chansons to contemporary 20th century music. "Quink," the members explain,
is just a "made up" name, compiled from "quintet" and the Dutch words for "birdsong" and
"joke." The name is a good fit for a group noted for "pure, sweet singing, blended with a bit of
humor in order not to take themselves too seriously."
The ™kr”s Folk Music Ensemble from Budapest, the leading folk revival band in
Hungary, features 75-year-old "Neti" (Sandor Fodor), the last great violinist in the Kalotaszeg
region of Transylvania, and Kalman Balogh, an internationally celebrated virtuoso of the
cimbalom, the "hammer dulcimer." Led by Csaba ™kr”s, one of the most respected revival
violinist in Hungary, the ™kr”s Ensemble showcases the artistry of authentic and unique
Hungarian folk music.
Tickets -- $10 general admission and $5 senior citizens -- will be available from 10 a.m.-
