SLU TO BEGIN OFFERING ESL CLASSES IN OCTOBER
HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University's new English as a Second Language
(ESL) Program will begin offering classes in October. The program provides non-native speakers
of English with the skills and the cultural awareness to help them succeed in an academic
program, the workplace, and in the community.
Housed in Southeastern's department of foreign languages and literatures, the ESL Program is
designed for anyone age 17 and older who wants to learn English as a second language.
Primarily, it is directed toward preparing international students to meet university admissions
requirements and to succeed in university studies in the United States. Through ESL classes,
participants can improve their competency in English, prepare for the required Test of English as
a Foreign Language (TOEFL) exam and learn about American life and culture.
The first eight-week, 20-hour class will begin Oct. 11, and additional sessions are scheduled
in January, March and June, said Margaret Marshall, head of Southeastern's foreign languages
and literatures department.
Students will be tested and placed in an appropriate level: basic (levels 1-2), intermediate
(levels 3-4) or advanced (levels 5-6). They will receive a Certificates of Attendance for
completing each level and a Certificate of Completion after completing the sixth level.
Small classes will be taught by qualified instructors who will use computers and
Southeastern's foreign language audio laboratory to teach skills in listening, speaking, reading
and writing English. Students also will receive instruction on American culture and have
opportunities to participate in area cultural activities.
