SOUTHEASTERN’S CONTEMPORARY ART GALLERY FEATURING TWO ARTISTS, OSCAR-WINNING
FILM
HAMMOND – Southeastern Louisiana University’s
Contemporary Art Gallery in East Stadium is featuring exhibits by two painters
and an Academy Award-winning short film through April 1.
“The Contemporary Still Life” will
feature a series of beautiful, haunting paintings of toys by Memphis painter
Beth Edwards, while "A Life of Paint and Words" will showcase works by
the late Stan Rice, a New Orleans painter and poet who was married to acclaimed
novelist Ann Rice.
Gallery director Dale Newkirk called
Rice’s paintings “raw visual expressions of his worldview.” The exhibit
will also include selections of Rice’s poetry.
The video gallery, also located in
East Stadium, will show "Ryan," the 2005 academy award winning film for
best-animated short. Directed By Chris Landreth and based on the life of
Canadian animator Ryan Larkin, it is the tale of an artist's imagination
and frustrations.
Gallery hours are 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m.,
weekdays, with extended hours until 8 p.m. on Wednesdays.
Also on display through April 1 is
the annual Youth Arts Month exhibit by Southeastern Laboratory School students
under the direction of art teacher Denise Tullier-Holly. The students'
artwork can be seen in the Sims Memorial Library lobby.
A special reception, which will also
feature Lab School music students directed by Gina Anthon, is scheduled
for 5-6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 22.
