HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University’s fall 2002 enrollment could be up by more than 500 students over last year’s head count, university officials said Wednesday (August 28). Stephen Soutullo, director of Academic Services, said enrollment numbers will not be official until Sept. 13, the 14th day of classes, but initial projections indicate that the final count could exceed 15,000 students. “We anticipated that enrollment would level off when we implemented admission standards two years ago,” Soutullo said. “But we also expected that enrollment would gradually increase after that initial decline. We are pleased to see that happening.” He said the upward trend has been clear since last spring, when current students began registering early for fall 2002 classes. With the registration process almost over, an approximate 3.4 percent increase is being projected. Southeastern enrollment hit its highest mark of 15,334 in fall 1998. Fall 2001 enrollment was 14,522, Soutullo said. He said this fall’s projected numbers include increases in all student categories, including approximately 300 new freshmen. “I think that after two years, we have been successful in communicating what our admission standards are and that more students are applying and being admitted,” Soutullo said in speculating the reasons for the enrollment increase. “High schools students are rising to the challenge of those new standards.” |
