SLU OPERA-MUSIC THEATRE PROGRAM TO PRESENT COMIC OPERAS HAMMOND -- The Southeastern Louisiana University Opera-Music Theatre Program has chosen Pulitzer Prize winner Gian-Carlo Menotti’s comic operettas “The Telephone” and “The Medium” as its contributions to Fanfare 2002. “The Telephone” and “The Medium” will be performed at 7:30 p.m., Oct. 24-26 at Southeastern’s Pottle Music Building Auditorium. The production will be led by the Music and Dramatic Arts Department’s Larry Gray, directors; Chuck Effler, producer and conductors; Joy Ratliff, vocal coach; Steve Schepker, set and lighting design, and Robin Steptoe, costumes. “The Telephone” and “The Medium,” which will be sung in English, presents a double bill of hilarious comedy and thrilling tragedy. “The Telephone” comically examines modern romance as Ben (James Flick of Charleston, W.Va.) attempts to propose to his girlfriend Lucy (Patricia Ramirez of Hammond) -- if only she would get off the phone! “The Medium” explores the world of the supernatural as the fraudulent Madame Flora (Daveda Karanas of Mandeville), in the midst of conducting a séance, feels a spectral hand on her neck. She accuses her daughter Monica (Jacquie Brecheen of Ponchatoula), and mute assistant Toby (Simon Pfiel of Hammond) of playing a cruel trick. Is Madame Flora going mad, or is the other world extracting its revenge? The cast also includes Thomas Cannon of Killona and Wendy Kinchen of Ponchatoula as Mr. and Mrs. Gobineau. Thaddeus Bailey of Robert will appear as a waiter and Kay Schepker of Hammond has the role of Mrs. Nolan. Tickets for “The Telephone” and “The Medium” are $10 for adults, $5 for senior citizens, non-SLU students, and SLU faculty, staff and alumni. Admission is free for Southeastern students with university I.D. Fanfare tickets are available at the Columbia Theatre for the Performing Arts box office, 220 E. Thomas Street, 985-543-4371.
