COSTA RICAN VICE PRESIDENT VISITS SOUTHEASTERN NOV.  8
     HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond will welcome Costa
Rican Vice President Dr. Astrid Fischel to campus Monday, November 8, 10 a.m. for a free
lecture open to the public.
     The topic of her lecture, which will be held in the Pottle Music Building Auditorium, is
"The Role of Latin American Women for the Next Century." Fischel has been the vice president
since 1998 and holds her doctoral degree in history from the University of Southampton,
England, and her master's degree in history from the University of Costa Rica.
     The vice president plans to promote an academic and cultural exchange between
Southeastern and Costa Rican institutions of higher education especially in the development of
areas such as arts, music, business administration, education, foreign languages, English as a
second language and new technologies.
     Fischel's lecture and visit are part of Fanfare, Southeastern's fall festival of the arts
sciences and humanities. Fanfare runs through November 11, featuring events, plays, musicals,
lectures and concerts including the Vienna Choir Boys, Pete Fountain, Capitol Steps and the
Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra.
     Fischel will be traveling with Marielos Azofeifa, director of the office of the president of
Costa Rica, and Jenny Guzman, executive assistant to the vice president.
