SLU CHEERLEADERS AND DANCE CAMPS HONORED
HAMMOND Southeastern Louisiana University has been awarded the Flagship Camp
Award from Universal Cheerleaders and Universal Dance Association.
The honor goes to universities that provide "an overall outstanding camp experience" to
participants in Universal Cheerleader and Dance camps. Southeastern, which has been hosting
Universal camps each summer since 1985, was praised for its facilities, friendly and helpful staff
and for the large number of participants in its annual summer camps.
Southeastern is one of only 30 university nationally to receive the Flagship Camp Award.
Veda Abene, executive assistant in Southeastern's Department of Continuing Education,
has been coordinating the Universal summer camps at Southeastern since 1984. She said 1,200
students from 90 high schools participated in Universal dance and cheerleader camps this
summer. Since 1981, Southeastern summer camps have brought approximately 34,000 students
to campus, Abene said. Since high school students get a preview of college life by living in
residence halls and enjoying campus facilities such as the cafeteria, Student Union and
bookstore, the camps are considered an excellent recruiting tool, Abene said.
Universal Cheerleaders and Dance representative Martha Conrad presented the Flagship
Camp Award to Abene and Kim Hunter Reed, executive assistant to President Sally Clausen, on
July 18.
