SLU'S GAMMA BETA PHI INDUCTS MORE THAN 50 MEMBERS
HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University recently inducted 50 new members
into its chapter of the Gamma Beta Phi Honor and Service Society.
The chapter, which numbers more than 400 Southeastern students, invites students ranked
in the top 15 percent of each class. To retain membership, students must maintain their academic
standing and complete a variety of civic or service projects. Gamma Beta Phi has been named the
university's most outstanding campus organization for five years. The chapter is active on a state
and national level with several members serving as officers.
At Southeastern, Gamma Beta Phi's many service projects include its annual "Two Tons
of Fun" holiday food drive. Held during Homecoming Week, the drive is scheduled this year for
Monday, Nov. 14, in the War Memorial Student Union mall. As a special 75th Anniversary
project, Gamma Beta Phi purchased a pair of historical markers to be placed at Southeastern's
first location -- the original Hammond High School on West Morris Street and the campus's
first classroom building, once located near the Ralph R. Pottle Music Building in Friendship
Circle.
The markers will be dedicated at the West Morris Street location at 9 a.m. on
Southeastern's Homecoming Day, Nov. 18.
