SOUTHEASTERN SPONSORS GOSPEL WORKSHOP JULY 31-AUGUST 12
HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University will host the tenth annual Gospel
Music Summer Workshop for Young People, July 31-August 12.
The workshop is designed to enhance young people's musical skills, increase their
knowledge of the historical roots of gospel music, build self-esteem and cultural pride and
encourage participants to stay in school, said Pat Ojo, Southeastern's director of multicultural
and international student affairs.
The two-week gospel music training program is open to ages 10-21 with varying degrees
of talent. The non-refundable registration fee is $20 per participant and includes a t-shirt for
those who successfully complete the workshop. Participants under 18 years of age must be
accompanied by a parent or other adult.
Registration is 5-7 p.m., July 31 and August 1, in the Pottle Music Building.
Rehearsals will be held from 5:30-9 p.m., July 31-August 4 and August 7-11. The closing
ceremony and concert is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., Saturday, August 12, at the Pottle Music
Building Auditorium. Concert tickets are $6 and will be on sale at the door beginning at 6 p.m.
on the night of the concert.
For the fifth year, two $500 Southeastern scholarships will be awarded to two high
school seniors. Applications are available in the Office of Multicultural and International Student
Affairs, in the War Memorial Student Union The deadline to submit scholarship applications is
August 4. Winners will be announced at the concert.
