SLU GOSPEL MUSIC SUMMER WORKSHOP AUGUST 2-14
HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University will host the ninth annual GOSPEL
MUSIC SUMMER WORKSHOP FOR YOUNG PEOPLE. The purpose of the summer
workshop is to enhance musical skills and to increase young people's knowledge of
the historical roots of gospel music.
The two-week gospel music training program is open to ages 10-22 with varying degrees
of talent. The registration fee is $15 per participant and includes a t-shirt to be worn during the
concert for those who successfully complete the workshop.
Registration is Monday, August 2, from 5:00-6:00 p.m. in SLU's Pottle Music
Building. An orientation session will begin at 6:00 p.m. followed by a special opening ceremony
at 7:00 p.m. Parents are requested to attend both the orientation and the opening night ceremony.
Rehearsals will be held from 6:00 to 9:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, August 2-13.
The closing ceremony and concert will be Saturday, August 14, at 8:00 p.m. at the Vonnie
Borden Theater in D Vickers. Concert tickets are $5 and will be on sale at the door beginning at
6:30 p.m. on the night of the concert.
For the fourth year, two $500 scholarships will be awarded to eligible workshop
participants. Applicants must have been accepted into the SLU freshman class, have a 2.0 or
higher grade point average, and have successfully participated in at least three of the last five
SLU Gospel Music Summer Workshops. Applications are available in the Office of Multicultural
and International Student Affairs, in room 208 of the Student Union The deadline to submit
scholarship applications is August 2, 1999 and the winners will be announced the night of the
concert.
