| GULF SOUTH HISTORY CONFERENCE IN GALVESTON ON OCTOBER

HAMMOND --The Gulf South Historical Association, a regional consortium of colleges and universities, will sponsor the Gulf South History and Humanities Conference at the Galveston Island Resort in Galveston, Texas, on Oct.17-19. This 21st annual conference is co-hosted by Texas Christian University and Texas A&M University at Galveston. Members of the Gulf South Historical Association consortium also include Southeastern Louisiana University, the University of South Alabama, the University of West Florida, Pensacola Junior College, and the University of Southern Mississippi. The annual conference will examine all aspects of Gulf South history through panels, roundtables and workshops presented by national and regional scholars, said Charles Elliot, assistant director of Southeastern’s Center for Southeast Louisiana Studies. Conference topics include "Civil Rights in Alabama," "Winning the War at Home: World War II along the Gulf," "Filibusters and Federal Soldiers," Controlling the Waters: the Navy and an Expanding Nation, 1804-65" "Civil Wart Blockade Runners on the Texas Coast," "Who was Jean Lafitte,""Race, Slavery and Wreckage in Colonial Florida," and "Feaver, Plague and the Pill." Other presentations address civil, military, legal, language, and environmental issues relative to the Gulf South. The association will award the annual William Coker Prize in Gulf South History as well as the first Gulf South History Book Award at the conference banquet on Friday evening. Historical and archaeological tours of the Galveston area and a reception-cruise aboard the tallship “Elissa” are available for conference-goers.
