SLU TO HOUSE NEW HISTORY-CULTURAL ASSOCIATION
HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University's Center for Regional Studies has been
chosen to house a long-established historical society that has been given a new name and focus.
The board of directors of the Gulf Coast History Association voted at its recent conference in
Pensacola, Fla., to change its name to the Gulf South History and Humanities Association and to focus
on promoting scholarly awareness of the history and culture of the Gulf South.
Southeastern history professor Samuel Hyde, director of the Center for Regional Studies, will
coordinate the association's transition with representatives of the University of West Florida,
University of South Alabama and University of Southern Mississippi. The association's journal, the
"Gulf Coast Historical Review," will be transferred to Southeastern from the University of South
Alabama in Mobile. Southeastern also will host the association's conference next October.
"The association will continue to be supported by a consortium of universities from every state
along the Gulf Coast," said Hyde, "but will it will expand its focus to include not just the coast and
environs, but also those regions impacted economically, politically and artistically by the Gulf of
Mexico."
Hyde said the new Gulf South History and Humanities Association will invite the public to
participate in its events and to subscribe to its journal and a new newsletter.
