SENATOR HAINKEL TO PRESENT SLU'S MORRISON LECTURE
HAMMOND -- Louisiana State Senator John Hainkel will present Southeastern
Louisiana University's annual "James H. Morrison Lecture on Politics and Government" at the
Music Recital Hall April 25.
The lecture series, created last year by the College of Arts and Sciences, honors James H.
Morrison, the Hammond native who represented Louisiana's Sixth Congressional District in the
U.S. House of Representatives from 1943-1967.
Hainkel's lecture will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the hall located in the Music Building Annex.
He will address "current proposed solutions to the problems of our state and prospects for its
future." Congressman Morrison has been invited as a special guest and a reception will follow in
the Oak Grove Room. The lecture is free to the public.
Morrison has donated his Congressional papers, consisting of approximately 200 boxes of
materials, to Southeastern's Archives and Special Collections. His extensive photographic
collection from his 11 terms in Washington, D.C., as well as his Congressional office furnishings,
are displayed in the Morrison Room in SLU's Linus A. Sims Memorial Library.
Hainkel was elected to the State Senate in 1987 and represents Tangipahoa, Orleans,
Jefferson, St. Tammany Parishes. He also served five terms as State Representative from the 89th
Representative District and as Speaker of the House from 1980-84. Hainkel has actively served
on many legislative committees since 1968. He is presently chairman of the Finance Committee;
serves on Insurance, Judiciary A and Labor & Relations committees and is ex-officio member of
the Revenue & Fiscal Affairs Committee.
