HANDGUN SAFETY COURSE FOR WOMEN AT SOUTHEASTERN
HAMMOND -- Having a handgun for protection is becoming very popular for women.
But while many women today are considering acquiring a handgun for protection, many don't
know much about selecting or use a weapon, or even how to properly store it.
Southeastern Louisiana University's Division of Continuing Education is offering
a course on handgun safety for women. Captain Harold Todd of Southeastern's university police
will be the instructor.
"The objective of the class is to have women who have a handgun or who may be
contemplating getting one, become familiar with different types of firearms, the proper operation
and proper shooting techniques such as breathing, sight alignment, stance and grip," said Todd.
Participants will learn about the different calibers of firearms, ammunition, and firearm
safety around the home including how to store a firearm safely and the various gun and trigger
locks available.
The schedule for the four session course is flexible with the first class meeting on
Wednesday July 7 at 6 p.m. The class will then decide on meeting dates for the additional
sessions. In addition to the classroom discussion, students will have a chance to actually practice
the techniques and become familiar with the weapons at an area shooting range.
For more information or to register for the course contact Continuing Education at 504-
549-2301.
