| NEW EVENTS JOIN SOUTHEASTERN HOMECOMING 2002 CALENDAR
HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University’s Homecoming 2002, a week’s worth of spirit-filled festivities, will tip off with a pep rally on Monday, Nov. 4, and celebrate “The Spirit of Louisiana -- Southeastern Style” all the way through to the grand finale, Homecoming Day, Saturday, Nov. 9. In addition to the traditional fun of student activities, the bonfire, awards evening, parade, picnic and basketball games, Homecoming 2002 will include two new events on Homecoming Day, said Alumni Director Kathy Pittman. Southeastern is calling all Greeks – all current and alumni members of Southeastern sororities and fraternities – for a first-ever Homecoming Day reunion. Kay Harrison, director of Student Organizations/Greek Life, said the reunion brunch is scheduled for 9:30a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Village, the sorority-fraternity housing complex on University Ave. Harrison said feedback about the reunion indicates as many as 300 students and alumni could attend. While Southeastern has 18 active Greek organizations, there have been more than 40 different chapters on campus since the 1930s, she said. “Anyone who has ever belonged to one of those organizations is welcome,” Harrison said. In addition to socializing, participants can enjoy music and refreshments, meet coaches, buy Southeastern merchandise and win door prizes, Harrison said. Current fraternities and sororities included in the reunion are: Phi Mu, Alpha Omicron Pi, Alpha Sigma Tau, Kappa Delta Tau, Sigma Tau Gamma, Tau Kappa Epsilon, Sigma Sigma Sigma, Delta Tau Delta, Theta Xi, Theta Chi, Alpha Phi Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Apha Kappa Alpha, Kappa Alpha, Zeta Phi Beta, Phi Beta Sigma and Theta Phi Alpha. Members of the following organizations are also invited: the Yellow Jackets Club, the Stags, Kappa Rho, Phi Kappa Theta, Zeta Pi Delta, Zeta Gamma Alpha, Sigma Lambda Chi, Pi Kappa Epsilon, Delta Sigma Epsilon, Phi Kappa Pi, Phi Lambda Chi, Alpha Omega, Phi Mu Sigma, Theta Psi, Beta Chi, Gamma Delta, Kappa Delta Phi, Delta Tau Alpha, Phi Kappa Epsilon, Sigma Alpha Kappa, Alpha Tau Omega, Chi Delta Tau, Beta Beta, Iota Tau Gamma, Ashkai E’ Furu, Iota Delta Sigma, Omega Psi Phi, Akindelas, Sigma Pi, Sigma Theta Rho, and Kappa Sigma. Southeastern’s newest alumni chapter, the African American Alumni Chapter, plans to cap off Homecoming activities, with an “All That Jazz” ball at 8 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 9, in the Student Union ballroom. Tickets for the event, which will feature a buffet and jazz band, are $25, said chapter President Duane Donald. He said proceeds from the ball will help the chapter establish scholarships for African American students. The Dream Team, the student committee that plans Homecoming fun for students, will tip-off Homecoming week with a pep rally at noon on Monday, Nov. 4. The event will feature the introduction of the 2002 Homecoming court, coaches and athletes; performances by the cheerleaders and Lionettes dance team, and a fashion show sponsored by Phi Mu sorority. That evening, winners of the annual Homecoming coloring contest, sponsored by the Hammond Daily Star, will be announced at Hammond Square Mall. Other student activities during the week include a “Fear Factor” style games night on Monday, vehicle painting on Tuesday, the Gumbo Ya Ya fest on Wednesday, and a holiday food drive and Pride Day on Thursday. On Thursday evening, Nov. 7, the Alumni Association and C’est Bon Restaurant in Ponchatoula will host the Hammond Chamber After Hours social at the Alumni Center from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. At 5:30 p.m., students will get together a spirited caravan through campus to the Homecoming bonfire, which will be torched at 6 p.m. outside the Alumni Center. The Homecoming golf tournament is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 7, at Oak Knoll Country Club in Hammond. The four-person scramble gets underway with a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6, is the entry deadline and the entry fee is $125 per player. Also on Friday, the annual Alumni Awards Evening, scheduled for 7 p.m., at Twelve Oaks, will honor Albert Kuhn, a 1965 graduate and Ponchatoula native, as 2002 Alumnus of the Year. An aerospace engineer, Kuhn has worked on NASA’s Apollo and space shuttle programs through positions with Boeing, Computer Sciences Corporation, McDonnal Douglas and IBM. In 2002, he was named an IBM vice president and Global Delivery Project executive for the American Express Account. He is responsible for global delivery of services and manages an organization of more than 2,000 IBM personnel in 26 countries. The evening will also feature recognition of the winners of the Distinguished Service and L.E. Chandler Awards and Distinguished Alumni in each academic college. Homecoming Day, Saturday, Nov. 9, will feature the Homecoming parade at 11 a.m. Pittman said that this year Southeastern’s parade is partnering with the city’s Veterans Day parade, which will roll through downtown Hammond to campus, followed by a community picnic at the University Center. The Lady Lions and Lions basketball teams will tune up for their upcoming seasons with exhibition matches against the Jackson Babes and Spirit Express at noon and 2 p.m., respectively, in the University Center arena. At halftime of the men’s game, the 2002 Homecoming queen and beau will be announced and the names of Homecoming contest winners will be drawn.
