HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University music students recently brought home statewide honors.
Hristo Birbochukov, a graduate student from Haskovo, Bulgaria, won the 2003 Young Artists Competition sponsored January 18 by the Monroe Symphony League and the Monroe Symphony Orchestra.
As a competition winner, Birbochukov will perform with the symphony on March 22. He also will be featured with the Southeastern Chamber Orchestra on March 26.
Birbochukov is a student of Southeastern music professor Henry Jones. Now in the second semester of his graduate program, he is the recipient of the university’s Marietta Reimers Schneider Piano Scholarship in Music. He has been studying piano since the age of five and is a graduate of the State Academy of Music in Sofia, Bulgaria.
Six members of the Southeastern Wind Symphony, directed by music professor Glen Hemberger, were chosen to perform in the 2003 Louisiana Intercollegiate Band, an ensemble comprised of the state’s finest collegiate musicians.
Charles Arnold of Slidell, trumpet, and Tony Wolfe of Baton Rouge, tuba, were selected as principal players in the prestigious ensemble. Also chosen to participate were Linsday Beasley, Germantown, Miss., flute; Val Laird, Rankin, Miss., clarinet; Kevin Estoque, Harvey, percussion; and David Delaney, Mandeville, trumpet.
The Intercollegiate Band was directed by H. Robert Reynolds, retired Henry F. Thurnau Professor of Music at the University of Michigan.
