FANFARE LECTURE AND EXHIBIT SOMETHING TO LAUGH ABOUT 
     HAMMOND -- Artist and author, Nicholas Roukes will give a Fanfare lecture on
"Humor in Art," 10:30 a.m., Saturday, October 9, at Southeastern Louisiana University's Music
Recital Hall. The lecture, the keynote address of the Louisiana Art Education Association's
(LAEA) annual meeting, is free and open to the public 
     Roukes is professor emeritus of art at the University of Calgary and author of 13 books on
art and art education.  A self-described "humorologist," he is a long-time advocate of humor in
art and has lectured extensively on the subject of visual humor. Roukes recently lectured at the
Marsh Art Gallery in Richmond, Va., and at the National Art Education Association's annual
meeting in Chicago.  He has established an extensive list and network of contemporary visual
humorists and has featured many of them in his lectures and publications. 
     According to Roukes, his experience in the art world has taught him that art should be a
joyful experience. "What better way to engender joy and delectation than with humor!" he said.
     In conjunction with the lecture and LAEA meeting, the Hammond Regional Arts Center
will host  "Louisiana Laughs," an exhibit of humorous works by Louisiana student artists and
their teachers. The opening reception will be held during the Fanfare Gallery Stroll, Sunday,
October 10, from 1-5 p.m. at the  Hammond Regional Arts Center, 217 East Thomas Street. 
     Roukes lecture and the exhibit are sponsored by the Louisiana Endowment for the
Humanities, a state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Louisiana Art
Education Association, and the Southeastern visual arts department.
