SLU HOSTS "INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL" NOV. 10-12
HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University will stage an "International Festival,"
Nov. 10-12, with a special focus on Mexico, Canada and Italy, the countries that host the
university's study abroad programs.
The International Festival will feature an art exhibit, cuisine, music and lectures and is
sponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences, the Cultural Resource Management Program and
the departments of Visual Arts and Foreign Languages and Literatures.
Special features include "Great Chefs of the Southeast," a daily cooking
demonstration/tasting at 4 p.m. in White Hall, and the opening reception of the Louisiana
International Exhibition, featuring artworks by 24 artists born in other countries but now living in
Louisiana. Jorge A. Varela Livares, head of the International Center of Language and Culture at
the University of the Americas in Puebla, Mexico, will be the festival's special guest.
Foreign Languages professors who plan to double as chefs are Dr. Mariana Kunow, who
will prepare enchiladas and other Mexican delicacies on Monday; Dr. Margaret Marshal, who
will make baguettes (French bread) and Gougeres and Dr. Lucia Guzzi Harrison, whose specialty
on Wednesday will be Rissoto con Zucchini and Linguini al Pesto.
Unless otherwise noted, programs are all scheduled for Sims Memorial Library. The
International Festival schedule also includes:
Monday, Nov. 10
Noon: Jorge A. Varela Livares, head of the International Center of Language and
Culture at the University of the Americas in Puebla, Mexico, and Charles Dranguet, coordinator
of SLU's International Programs, will discuss Southeastern's summer program in Mexico.
1 pm: SLU foreign languages professor Jeanne Gillespie and her students will present

"Creative Expressions of the Hispanic World," featuring poetry and songs.
3 pm: Foreign languages professor Cheryl Javaherian will talk about "the Art of
Celebration in Mexico," explaining the traditions of "Las Posadas" (Christmas) and la Semana
Santa (Easter).
4 pm, White Hall: "Great Chefs of the Southeast: Mexico," Dr. Marina Kunow.
4-6 pm, Clark Hall Gallery: Opening reception, "Louisiana International
Exhibition."
6 pm, Cafe' Ole': The new restaurant across from the Hammond Post Office in
downtown Hammond will host "A Night in Mexico," offering complimentary Beef Taquitos.
Tuesday, Nov. 11
Noon: Dr. James F. Gaines discusses "The French of North America."
1 pm: Sims Memorial Library: Dr. Margaret Marshall presents a visual journey into
the grandeur of France's treasures in "Castles of the Loire Valley."
3 pm: Sims Memorial Library: Dr. Frederic Pallez demonstrates "Francophone
Culture on the World Wide Web."
4 pm, White Hall: "Great Chefs of the Southeast: France," Dr. Margaret Marshall.
Wednesday, Nov. 12
Noon: Sims Memorial Library: Dr. Lucia Guzzi Harrison details Southeastern's give-
week summer study program in Verona, Italy.
1 pm: Dr. Kenneth J. Panton, assistant directory of the British Studies Program at the
University of Southern Mississippi and USM history professor Dr. Andy Wiest discuss "SLU in
England and the Carribean."
3 pm: Dr. Aileen Mootoo offers "A Brief History of the Congo and its Artistic
Heritage."
4 pm, White Hall: "Great Chefs of the Southeast: Italy," Dr. Lucia Guzzi Harrison.
