SOUTHEASTERN STUDENTS DESIGN NEW LOGOS FOR KSLU
HAMMOND -- Students in Southeastern Louisiana University professor Gary Keown's
Advanced Digital Design class recently put their skills as computer artists to good use, not just to
earn a grade, but also to please a real world client.
The client is 90.9 KSLU, the university's radio station. At the request of KSLU General
Manager Wayne Cain, Keown assigned his 19 students to design a new logo for the station,
which recently underwent both administrative and format facelifts.
"The design work is fabulous," said Cain as he and department heads Karen Fontenot,
communication, and Roy Blackwood, visual arts, gathered with Keown to view a display of the
logos in the lobby of D Vickers Hall. The logos will be on display through Oct. 31.
"Dr. Keown's students really outdid themselves," Cain said. "We're going to have a
tough time picking a winner, because the quality of work is so excellent."
Cain is gathering input on the logo from students via a "voting box" adjacent to the
display and from faculty, staff and administrators. He said a final decision on which logo will
become the station's new visual identity will be made in November.
Cain said he sees more partnerships with both campus and community ahead for KSLU.
After his experience with Keown's design students, "We really look forward to working on
further creative projects with the visual arts department," he said.
Students who submitted designs were Carla M. Moll, Barataria; Eva Moorman,
Mohammad Halabi, Kevin Grier, Trey Goudeau, Laina Fontenot, Eric Gilley and Lane
Faucheux, Baton Rouge; Rachel Kirsch Methvin, Ponchatoula; Joan Pigeon, Mandeville; Charles
Hellbach and Monica Dauzat, New Orleans; Mark Rhodes, Michael Clark, Kathryn Mackenroth
and Heather Schneider, Slidell; Deborah M. Davis, Hammond; Suzonne Bernard, Denham
Springs; Nikki Hesse, Norco.
